We currently do not home octupus and our seahorses are currently behind the scenes in preparation for display which is why you would not have seen them. In addition to this natural environmental enrichment our team of penguin keepers provide additional species specific enrichment, for example providing scatter feeds in the water encourages natural foraging behaviours. This includes a water stream, water sprinklers, pebble beaches to allow natural nest building, a highly textured floor which is great for our penguins foot health, an ice machine, lots of different areas with varying light levels and a split level tank, which extends some distance under the floor from the viewing windows, and has a much deeper diving area.

In addition to this their display has many natural enrichment features inbuilt giving the penguins choices over how to use their space. In this part of the UK it’s simply too warm to keep Gentoo penguins outside, although in the cooler months of the year we do have an outdoor balcony area which our penguins can have access to. Penguins are naturally colonial animals, our enclosure could potentially house many more birds happily, although we choose not to.

During our design process we consulted both the American and European penguin husbandry manuals – their standards became our absolute minimum.
Our penguins are all captive bred Gentoo Penguins and their purpose built habitat is designed to replicate a penguin colony on South Georgia. It is always our goal to make our animal’s habitats and their lifestyles as realistic as possible. Thank you for your feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your day at The Deep however I’m sorry you left feeling concerned about our penguins’ welfare. can’t comment on the cafe’s as I didn’t eat there but they smelt good😂 It has fake plastic ice boulders and purple lights beaming down from the ceiling for our entertainment and looked industrial, and to be honest it was so small, they had no where to go beside a small swimming pool that was just bare, there was no enrichment or hiding places, it was spectator glass pretty much the entire way around, with people the other side of the glass not even an arm length away starring in with phones taking pictures, it’s funny how the walk way to the exhibit has a wall made from ice for people to touch, but they use fake ice for the penguins…… lastly most of the items In the gift shop didn’t correspond to what I had just seen. i was surprised they had penguins as I don’t see how it mixed with “fish” and sea creatures, but not impressed with their exhibit.
The jellyfish were awesome, but I don’t recall seeing octopus and seahorse which was a shame as I would of loved to see them, I feel I saw pretty much the same thing throughout the entire place. I enjoyed that it was educational and the lighting made it exiting, walking through the stages of aquatic life.
